Master of My Make-Believe by Santigold

Why, oh, WHY can't I stream live media at work?!? I'll just have to wait until I get home to watch THIS taped broadcast of Santigold on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. All the more reason I CANNOT WAIT for 5pm!

In the meantime, I'm inspired to share just 5 of my fave tracks from Santigold's latest album Master of My Make-Believe. I might as well post the whole album since the entire thing is THAT good but you can look the rest up for yourself.

This woman is beyond talented & SOOO good live. I can't wait to see her for my 3rd time THIS YEAR at Outside Lands in SF in August! And, this time, I'm gonna make a point to get up nice & close so I can hopefully run up on stage to party with Santi, her super cool pair of female dancers & a bunch of other diehard fans from the crowd!

Go! featuring my love, Karen O

Jimmy Cliff @ Hollywood Park Race Track - 6/22/12

I saw Jimmy Cliff for the 1st time at The Hollywood Bowl's annual Reggae night a couple Julys back &, although I recall enjoying his show & having a great time dancing around while socializing & drinking a large quantity of 2 Buck Chuck (fully taking advantage of the Bowl's BYOB policy), Jimmy himself didn't really stand out to me that much...probably because, unless you drop over $100 on really good seats, you're never that close to the stage at The Hollywood Bowl. That's the tradeoff though for the beautiful venue, the laid back, everyone-drinking their-own-booze atmosphere & the awesome acoustics because, even when you're sitting in 1 of the very back sections at The Bowl, the acoustics still sound relatively decent.

I'm SO glad I didn't think, just because I'd been to a Jimmy Cliff concert before, I didn't need to see him again because I definitely DID! I had NO idea Jimmy had such an unbelievable amount of energy on stage nor did I know he's got some KILLER moves. Jimmy barely ever stood still (it looked liked his neck was made of rubber!) & he kept the crowd going strong for his entire 2-hour set. I now fully understand why this man is SUCH a legend!

Plus, you can't beat getting to watch & bet on horse races, drink cocktails & eat off food trucks for a few hours prior to an outdoor, Friday night, summer concert in LA!

Ballads Blues & Bluegrass (1961) World Premiere Screening PLUS Live Performances by Father John Misty, Sara Watkins, Curt Smith of Tears for Fears & Asdru Sierra of Ozomatli @ The LA Film Fest @ The GRAMMY Museum - 6/19/12

Sometimes you need to do something a little different...like go to the LA Film Fest at The GRAMMY Museum in Downtown LA on a Tuesday night to attend the world premiere screening of a never-before-seen short film from 1961 directed by Alan Lomax called Ballads Blues & Bluegrass followed by a Q&A session & live performances by Father John Misty (previously of Fleet Foxes), Sara Watkins, Curt Smith of Tears for Fears & Asdru Sierra of Ozomatli. I highly recommend checking out Ballads Blues & Bluegrass if you ever get the chance (definitely at least watch the trailer below) as it was pretty incredible. What a unique & special evening :-)

My favorite part of the Q&A session was listening to Alan Lomax's daughter talk about her father & all the famous, old musicians who partied, played music & sometimes even lived in their apartment throughout the 60s.

The funniest moment of the night was when host & KCRW DJ Chris Douridas asked Father John Misty to explain how he ended up moving to Seattle, joining Fleet Foxes then branching off to do his own thing &, instead of providing any bit of detail, Father John Misty simply said, "I quit!" then picked up his guitar ready to play his 1st song. He made it very clear he was not interested in sharing anything more than his music :-P

Ballads Blues & Bluegrass (1961) by Alan Lomax

"In the early 1960s, when Greenwich Village was bursting with a folk music revival, the Friends of Old Time Music made it their mission to introduce urban audience to some of the legends of pre-war American traditional music. After a 1961 series of concerts featuring Roscoe Holcomb, Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson, Alan Lomax invited the artists and a who's who of the folk revival back to his West 3rd Avenue apartment for an impromptu song swap. Filming was arranged on the fly and a raw, many-layered evocation of the art and attitude of the period emerges from the footage, with some of the biggest names of the era, old timers and revivalists alike: Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon, Jean Ritchie, Ernie Marrs, Peter LaFarge, Ramblin Jack Elliott, Guy Carawan, the Greenbriar Boys, and the New Lost City Ramblers.

Ballads, Blues, & Bluegrass is a remarkable portrait of a brief but fabled era that was widely documented in recordings but all too under-represented in moving image." - Media Generation -

GO SEE SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS ON JULY 18th!!!

Exactly ONE MONTH from today I'll be seeing Shut Up And Play The Hits at the Regent Theatre in Westwood. Never in my life have I been SO unbelievably excited to see a documentary. I can't wait to relive some of my favorite LCD Soundsystem memories & learn A LOT more about the one & only Mr. James Murphy. There's a reason I saw this band live SEVEN times before James officially ended an era. If this film is playing anywhere near you, PLEASE go see it!!

Destroyer @ El Rey Theatre - 6/6/12

At Coachella 2012, I declined to join a few of my camping buddies for Destroyer's relatively early afternoon set because I didn't know any of their material &, based on the name alone, I assumed Destroyer was some sort of death metal rock band. I'm happy I soon discovered they're quite the opposite, they're Canadian, they already have NINE studio albums & they're awesome!! Otherwise, I would've missed their super dope set at El Rey Theatre last night!

Ben Howard @ The Troubadour - 6/5/12

Thanks to yet another kind-hearted Craigslist soul, I was lucky enough to snag a last-minute, face value ticket for only $17.50 to Ben Howard's 1st of 2 sold out shows at The Troubadour last night!

I had missed Ben's early afternoon set at Sasquatch & was bummed because I SO desperately wanted to hear The Wolves live at The Gorge! If you haven't seen
the Danny Macaskill BMX video featuring Ben's beautiful single The Wolves yet, be sure to check it out HERE right now!

I'm grateful I'm not scared to attend a concert by myself every once in a while because Ben Howard's set last night (which was also the 1st gig he has EVER played in LA) was fuckin UNREAL. His voice is flawless & every single track is pure perfection. I really didn't know much of Ben's material before last night's show but now I have TONS of favorites. Check EVERYTHING out below!!

The Beach Boys @ The Hollywood Bowl - 6/2/12

Last Saturday, my BEST friend of 15 years, Blair, flew to LA from San Francisco for only 27 hours total just so she could accompany me to The Beach Boys' 50th annivesary show at The Hollywood Bowl. Not only was this Blair's 1st visit to The Hollywood Bowl but it was also her very 1st time EVER attending a concert with me! Needless to say, we went ALL OUT & had an absolute BLAST drinking & dancing & singing along (which, unfortunately, you can hear a LOT of in my videos below...LOL) to all of our favorite Beach Boys' hits. It was definitely an older, more mellow crowd than usual but everyone was having SO much fun that it really didn't matter how old you were. We were ALL partying like it was 1962!!

Sleeping Ute by Grizzly Bear

I was SO excited this morning when I discovered a new Grizzly Bear album is being released in September then I was even more stoked when I saw on their website http://grizzly-bear.net/ that they're playing the Greek Theater on 10/10/12. THEN I got bummed out because I realized I'll be flying back from Hawaii on the night of October 10th &, therefore, will be unable to attend what is sure to be a beautifully amazing show. I know because Grizzly Bear & Beach House at The Hollywood Palladium in October 2009 was one of the better shows I've ever seen. It predated the blog though so I only have low quality Facebook videos to prove it.

So...the 1st half of this day has certainly been an emotional rollercoaster but at least I have the 1st single off G-Bear's new album to console me :-)

If I were a UFC fighter & I had to pick ONE song to play while walking into The Octagon, this would be it. Then I'd channel my inner Gina Carano & kick EVERYONE's ass ;-)

What song would you pick?
