Killing Moon
This is one of my favorite songs, Killing Moon, from one of my favorite movies, Donnie Darko, covered by one of my new favorite bands, Nouvelle Vague. The video is pretty sweet too:
And, because Echo & The Bunnymen are playing on Friday night at Coachella & the song is just so great, here's the original:

I'll Kill Her by Soko
Soko didn't perform this song tonight like I had hoped she would when she opened for Nouvelle Vague at the Fonda (stay tuned for Thursday's post) but her set was still a lot of fun. She's so cute & so French that you almost forget she's singing about murdering her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend!

Yeasayer & Warpaint @ The Natural History Museum in Los Angeles - 2/5/10
Last night, my friend Darin & I attended the 2nd 2010 First Fridays event at The Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. Since we both had recent birthdays, it was our birthday celebration show & it was AMAZING!
I must admit, for a while there, I didn't think we were going to get into the North American Mammal Hall where Warpaint & Yeasayer were performing but, luckily, we were patient, we had a tasty Ketel One & Sunkist cocktail I managed to smuggle into the museum & we had entertaining company in line. It took a LONG time but, after about an hour of winding our way through the museum, we were finally admitted into the main room & we only missed Warpaint's 1st song. I could barely believe we got in but I am SO grateful we did!
I'd never heard of Warpaint before last night. These hot rocker chicks were definitely a pleasant surprise:

Then there was Yeasayer. They were unbelievable. I tried to get a few good video clips & decent photos but there was a very tall girl with a very high bun standing right in front of me so she kinda messed up my documentation. In retrospect though, that tall chick with the high hair actually did me a favor. I'm glad I wasn't distracted trying to get a bunch of cool footage with my crappy little camera. It let me focus on my dancing :-)
After opening their set with the eerie 1st track The Children from their latest album Odd Blood, Yeasayer played all my favorite songs including Tightrope, Sunrise & Ambling Alp:
Yeasayer's set was a little over an hour &, in that short time, I'm pretty sure they played every song off their new album. Every person in the crowd was totally entranced & The North American Mammal Hall, filled with trippy dioramas of mountain goats, moose & bison, was the perfect setting for Yeasayer's wild dance party.
The 2 songs that just made every person in the audience go crazy dancing were Rome:

Benvenue's Hollywood Gig
Last Friday night, I had the privilege of seeing Benvenue perform at On the Rox on Sunset Boulevard. I had never heard a single song by Benvenue before so I had no idea what to expect but the best way to experience a band for your 1st time is by seeing them perform live. It's the true test of an artist's talent. Benvenue passed that test with flying colors!
If I had to make a comparison, I'd say Benvenue is like Incubus meets Rage Against the Machine but, despite the similarities, Benvenue definitely has a unique sound that's all their own.
It also doesn't hurt that they're a bunch of hotties! Between Sid's sexy handlebar mustache & Fran's bulging biceps, it was tough to always stay focused on the music Friday night but it wasn't an entirely unwelcome distraction ;-)
There was no escaping the obvious fact that Benvenue brought the house down in Hollywood! The crowd went nuts! Unfortunately, the venue's strict cut-off time prevented Benvenue from giving their audience the encore they demanded but it never hurts to leave the fans begging for more.
For more information on Benvenue, check out: http://www.myspace.com/benvenue
Their next show is February 23rd in San Francisco so, if you live in the Bay Area, I HIGHLY suggest you go see the awesomeness that is Benvenue for yourself!
