Black Lips @ El Rey Theater in LA - 1/23/10

Last Saturday night, my good friend Bobby & I celebrated our January birthdays together by going to see Black Lips at the El Rey Theater (my FAVORITE indoor venue in Los Angeles). We were supposed to go camping at Joshua Tree instead & I was planning to sell my tickets to someone off Craigslist but, due to the bad weather all last week, we postponed our camping adventure to this coming weekend. Bob & I went to the show & it all worked out!

Black Lips are infamous for their wild stage antics. They're so extreme they've been banned from the entire country of India for being too offensive. I'll admit I was expecting to see some crazy sh*t. Things didn't get quite as weird as I was hoping they would but the show was still a blast. I may not have seen any male nudity & the band members may not have made out with each other (just a few examples of strange things they've been known to do) but Black Lips still put on really fun show & the crowd got super rowdy. I've never seen so much crowd surfing at the El Rey!

Wax @ On The Rox - 1/21/10

I'd never heard of Wax before last week but, after his show at On The Rox in Hollywood Thursday night, I'm newly obsessed. Wax has got it all. He raps, he plays guitar & he sings. His lyrics are smart & funny. Plus, he's pretty hot...an added bonus :-) I can't wait to see his next show!

Benvenue @ On The Rox This Friday 1/29/10

I'm SO excited to see my friend Sid's band, Benvenue, for my very 1st time this Friday night at On the Rox (above The Roxy) on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood! These guys are making the trek all the way down from San Francisco so come on out & show them some love!

Meet the band:

The Muddy Reds, Welldiggers Banquet, Wake Up Lucid & 27 Miles This Thursday @ The Air Conditioned Supper Club!

Join me at The Muddy Reds' JANUARY 28th BIRTHDAY BASH!!!

These boys are blowin' up quick so jump on the bandwagon while the shows are still local & cheap! Then, when The Muddy Reds are hugely famous (which I KNOW they will be), you can say you were a fan from the very beginning!

GZA @ The Echoplex - 1/15/10

I wanted to do a post about how amazing GZA (of Wu-Tang Clan fame) was at The Echoplex last Friday night but, unfortunately, I wouldn't know because I never actually saw GZA perform! I arrived at the venue ~9:00pm (the official show start time was 8:30pm) &, by 12:20am, there was still no sign of the headliner. Apparently, GZA finally graced the audience with his presence at 12:30am. This must've been only a few moments after my concert buddy & I gave up & went home. GZA did an hour set & I hear it was good but I don't regret leaving because I don't appreciate being forced to wait 4 hours for the main act.

Sidenote: I'd never been to The Echoplex before last Friday Night. I thought it was a really cool venue & I want to go back soon for one of their weekly Wednesday night Dub Club events! I've heard nothing but good things so who's coming with me??

Drinking With The Dinosaurs

Last night was the 1st time I've ever attended First Fridays at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles & now I'm counting down the days until the next event on February 5, 2010.

I loved everything about the evening: the $9 admission fee; the cool, club-esque lighting; the 3 full bars located in various locations throughout the museum; the fact you could wander just about anywhere, cocktail in hand; the chill DJ Lounge in The African Mammal Hall &, most importantly, the incredible live performances by tUnE-yArDs & Atlas Sound.

ATMOSPHERE - 10 Tracks

I love hip hop. Some of my favorite hip hop artists include De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, RZA, Pharoahe Monch & MF Doom but, if I was forced to pick one all-time favorite, it'd have to be Atmosphere. I just can't get enough of Ant's beats. He uses a super creative variety of instruments & sound bites unlike anything else I've ever heard. Then there's Slug who I simply adore. His lyrics are quick, smart, honest & poetic. I've seen Atmosphere live 3 times & they never disappoint. I also like the fact they have released 10 albums since 1997 & don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Here are 10 of my most beloved Atmosphere tracks (in no particular order):
